Product

A connected mobility platform designed to make everyday driving smarter, safer and more seamless through real-time vehicle insights and intelligent features.

Challenge

Vehicle data was scattered and hard to act on. Drivers had no simple way to understand what was happening with their car, stay safe on the road, or get help when something went wrong.

Solution

A single connected dongle and app that turns raw vehicle data into real-time diagnostics, location tracking, safety alerts and in-car WiFi, later extended into Jio's broader IoT ecosystem and white-labelled for automotive brand partners.

Result

Company-wide testing and the first launch reached 2000+ users. JioMotive went on to contribute to JioThings' growing IoT portfolio, generating A$360k+ in revenue from operations in FY2021 to 22, a trajectory pointing to the platform's much larger revenue potential over time.

One dongle, a smarter driving experience

JioMotive is a one-stop solution offering consumers data of their car, WiFi hotspot connectivity and roadside assistance in one easy-to-use dongle. In today's rapidly changing vehicle environment, it's the first step towards the internet of moving things, allowing Indian consumers to experience their cars like never before.

Pros: plug-and-play device transfers all data to a cloud service included in the purchase, and improves driving experience through analysis of habits.

Cons: users must buy an updated, slightly more expensive OBD device to get WiFi compatibility.

Dash

New York-based OBD II & app. OBD II reader and application software.

Pros: certain features are free to use on the app without purchasing the OBD device; can also be used as a white-label application for fleet management.

Cons: users can only choose between a list of preferred OBD devices, as the company doesn't offer an official OBD device.

Hum by Verizon

A multi-tiered line of products including an OBD II reader and application software.

Pros: users can choose from a variety of options to suit their needs; currently used as a white-label application for fleet management by major ride-sharing companies.

Cons: users have to pay a premium to convert their car into a WiFi hotspot, as it isn't sold in the base version of Hum.

Automatic

San Francisco-based OBD II & app. Free and paid subscription OBD II reader and application software.

Pros: plug-and-play allows users to gain information without uploading data to a cloud/server.

Cons: the free service offers very basic features, and the paid (freemium) tier is quite steep per car.

Across the market, drivers had to trade off between an included OBD device, cloud-backed data, or WiFi without extra cost. JioMotive's opportunity was to offer all three, an included device, cloud data and an in-car hotspot, in one plan.

Auto Expo 2020

Taking JioMotive to the real world

Jio showcased its end-to-end capability to enable a connected car ecosystem at the Auto Expo held in Greater Noida in February 2020. Along with the app, we designed everything from the stall graphics to marketing collateral, to attract customers and potential leads from automobile brands.

Early 3D renders explored stall layouts and signage before the final build.

Brand integrations

Extending the platform to Skoda and Volkswagen

The Auto Expo led to a couple of brand integrations, with JioMotive built as a white-label app designed to other brands' guidelines. We worked closely with the Skoda and Volkswagen teams in Europe to get the brand design guidelines for both and integrate the JioMotive design accordingly.

Platform integration

Becoming part of a larger IoT ecosystem

JioThings is a gateway to connected 'Everything', a comprehensive B2C app used to connect to all of your GPS/Bluetooth-enabled Jio devices, keeping you connected with family, friends, pets, vehicles and belongings.

JioMotive was redesigned to be part of the JioThings app as part of the IoT super-app, so people could track their vehicle dongle, health and data from within it.

Reflection

Looking back, and what's next

Challenges faced in the project

  • Certain parameters couldn't be displayed on the app because of inaccurate readings from the device
  • Couldn't change the UI because of the rigorous development process and lack of resource availability, with two high-priority brand integrations lined up

What can be improved

  • Device onboarding process on the app can be more intuitive
  • UI design style can be improved according to current or upcoming design trends

What's next

  • More features like remote door lock/unlock, engine start/stop, AC control
  • Continued brand integrations with features pertaining to those particular brands
